The Pros and Cons of Olly Timing

Curious about Olly Timing? Want to know more? Considering it?

We are clearly biased, and here is our own assessment of the pros and cons of using us!

Pros

  • Timekeepers are not required, and all the associated organisation.
  • Results queries can be authoritatively answered by reviewing video replay of the finishes.
  • Rapid and accurate results export directly into Meet Manager software.
  • Official times accepted by Swimming NSW, except for State Records.
  • No concerns about timekeeper quality. Consistent accuracy.
  • Can support safe sport compliance by removing unaccredited people from pool deck.
  • Impress stakeholders and improve event experience. Clear pool deck looks more professional and gives more space for officials and athletes. Fewer chairs and programs required.
  • Low footprint hardware.
  • Better reliability than other timekeeping solutions.
  • Significantly lower cost relative to touchpad systems.

Cons

  • Premium (paid for) solution. Some customers cover the cost by adding a small amount to the event entry charge.
  • Results are not instantaneous. The automatic (AI) times are immediate but not official. It typically takes a few seconds per lane for the human operator to review and confirm the official times. If all official results must be confirmed before the next heat is swum then the meet might run slightly slower. A heat interval of 38″ or more is recommended.
  • Currently Olly Timing does not connect directly to a scoreboard.
  • When used for backup timing alongside a primary touchpad system, currently Olly Timing does not compare every result against the touchpads. This can result in some some soft touches being missed resulting in slower times being initially recorded. There is currently no paper trail for Recorders to review.
  • Currently a good results processing workflow is required to ensure all no-swims are removed from results and ensure all swims have times.
  • Not accepted for State records.
